He’s one of the most popular guys out there, even being the first name on many people’s lips when they want to share their faith with somebody, “I don’t know how to say it, but he sure can!” But for another thought, is John Piper kinda annoying? The gushing, the hand waving, the fact that it sounds like he’s crying all the time (yet there isn’t a solitary teardrop to be found), just the overacting of it all. I mean just look at Shatner, the big ham, Piper makes Shatner’s acting look legit, that’s how OTT he can feel. I’ve got his The Future of Justification on my bookshelf (not Shatner’s Future of Justification. . .you silly), I’ve got his rival N. T. Wright on there too, but still, theology aside, is Piper just a bit too much? Is it possible that the superstar preacher (because he IS a superstar) is also a bad first point of contact for people looking to find faith in Jesus Christ?
You said it so well. Ha! 😉

It attaches a kind of weirdness factor to our faith, which is a shame because this is an everyday thing to the faithful Christian, it’s just our everyday. So we then have to go through that barrier too when we’re out and sharing Jesus’ power with somebody.

Ha ha, that’s pretty funny. I appreciate some of Piper’s preaching and teaching but he is definitely a little bit silly at times with his hand gestures and vocalizations. But what drives me really crazy is when I hear him pronounce “covetous” with an extra e, as in “coveteous.” That, and his Calvinism.

God bless him for whatever good he does. 🙂 Yeah the intonation is a bit off putting, I’ve heard this from men who practically worship Piper.
